It is easier for a beginner to get an even stain. Put it on with a clean rag(I use old sweat socks). Wipe it off and let dry for 24 hours. Use Spar urethane(1 quart should be enough), I prefer semi-gloss or satin(looks new longer), for the top. DON'T shake the can, stir only. Bubbles from shaking will ruin your finish. I use the black, foam brushes(disposable) to apply spar.
