Its really hard to break because the slightest tasty tidbit is positive reinforcement, even a crumb or something dripped onto the counter. Keep a spray bottle handy and let him have it every time you catch him. Even then, he will probably do it behing your back, but eventually it will not be as frequent. The other thin is keep the counters really moist for a while with water and lemon juice mixed, they hate wet feet and lemons.
